ABOUT US

We are a USDA registered Farm and an NCDA Registered Nursery in Person County, NC. We employ Organic practices, just not certified.

Greybeard Farm was founded in 2015 in Person County, North Carolina for the purpose of growing Medicinal Herbs for personal use. Our ancestors had an intimate knowledge of Herbal treatments for a variety of ailments. While some are not as potent or as targeted as modern medicines, almost all medicines have a component that begins with a plant-based Herbal Chemistry. In order to try to keep some of this herbal knowledge from being lost, I have developed a small farm growing over 45 different plants known for their Medicinal qualities. A list of these can be found in the Medicinal Herbs section of this website.

It is not our intention to develop into a large herbal producer, but rather a source for other homesteaders or persons interested in medicinal gardening, with information on what and how to grow them. As we have an over abundance of something we may offer it, but it would be better if you would volunteer a little help and go home with some herbs on the house. We prefer to be a educational resource as opposed to a commercial business.

As we are an off-grid homestead, we also raise a breed of Rabbit called Champagne d'Argent. It is a large breed of rabbit commonly raised for meat, but it is a very friendly breed, suitable for a pet if you are OK with it getting between 9 to 11 pounds at maturity. We do not breed for quantity, only breeding once or twice per year to keep the Bucks and Does experienced. When that happens we usually have between 8 and 10 kits, and often offer them for sale. Our rabbitry is more focused on genetics and maintaining quality breeding stock in case of food shortages or supply chain disruptions. At that time we would breed for a larger colony of rabbit.

Interestingly, we have found that many of our Herbal Medicines are plants that rabbits love to eat, and are more healthy than the typical pelletized feed sold in stores. Some herbs are fed to our rabbits on a regular basis, some given to them only if certain health issues arise. A full dialogue on what herbs are used for which purpose is given in our C d'A RABBITS section of this website.

Community Volunteer Workdays:

We will on scheduled workdays, allow interested persons to come out to help with various gardening chores... yes, that includes weeding at times ... but usually to prune off some of the plants to keep it healthy and trim, keeping the herb for your own use as a tea, or to make tincture or salves on your own. We often find volunteer plants that escape their raised beds, or simply crop up elsewhere tht need to be dug up. Instead of composting them, we'll offer them to you for your own garden free of charge, you just dig them up and smooth over the hole - We WILL direct you which ones you can take. We also work hard to save seed from these medicinals, even though most are perennials. Its always good to have seed on hand.
